Breaking Plates, Building Beauty: My Great Aunt’s China Reimagined

It all began with a stack of china plates that were my great aunts.

I have always wanted to use them in a piece and Layla's background was the perfect choice.

It took me hours to cut them all up into small triangles.  Triangles are the easiest shape to fit together and I wanted the background to look seamless.

I don't always begin with the background. Here you can see I put in the Antique metal chain for the hat band first. But, I knew this color would dictate to me what other colors to use, so I had to do it and it took me days!

With a little more information being present, I decided the 1 plate background was a bit harsh and so I cut out flowers from other china plates to scatter and break up the red/gold. It is subtle but effective.

Lastly, to utilize all of the plates because you all know I am all about zero waste! I used the center of my aunt's plates for the hat. Again, adding just a few scattered flowers to break up the monotonous pattern.

Viola', the unveil!…

Layla is one of my very favorite Cowgirls because there is so much going on and yet very calming.
